Gateway of the Pacific
BioMed Reality - Phase One

San Francisco, California

While working at Flad Architects, Michael Ford contributed to the design of Gateway of Pacific, a flagship life science development for BioMed Realty in South San Francisco.

Phase one of the project comprises a twelve-story laboratory and office tower paired with a five-story mid-rise, connected by a vaulted glass atrium. Together, the buildings total approximately 483,500 square feet of next-generation laboratory and office space designed to support flexibility, customization, and long-term growth.

The development also includes the Traverse amenity building, a 43,700-square-foot shared facility housing dining, fitness, conference, and social spaces that activate the central plaza and serve both tenants and the surrounding community.

Designed as a campus anchor, Gateway of Pacific reflects an evolution in the scale and culture of contemporary scientific research. The architecture emphasizes transparency, daylight, and environmental performance, and the project achieved LEED Platinum certification.
