Design Architect: BrandNu Design Studio LLC
Exhibit Designer: Quatrefoil Associates

The Memphis Hip Hop Museum aspires to become a modern landmark that honors the past, engages the present, and inspires the future of Memphis culture. This museum reinforces the city’s role as a cornerstone in the evolution of Hip Hop in the south. The Memphis Hip Hop Museum is envisioned as a cultural landmark honoring the city’s profound influence on music, art, and storytelling, with concept proposals for two potential sites: 409 S. Main Street and 380 Beale Street. Designed as an immersive destination, the museum integrates projection-based exhibitions, public art, live performances, and community programming to create a one-of-a-kind experience in the heart of downtown Memphis. By celebrating the city’s hip hop pioneers while activating South Main and Beale Street with energy and creativity, the project establishes a cultural ecosystem that operates on both neighborhood and citywide scales. The Memphis Hip Hop Museum aspires to become a modern landmark that informs every guest what the south has to say about hip hop.

Scope of Work

  • Site selection and feasibility studies

  • Programming and space planning

  • Architectural design, including façades and interiors

  • Adaptive reuse and cultural integration strategies

  • Coordination with consultants, city officials, and community partners

At 409 S. Main Street, the design transforms the existing building into a dynamic cultural hub. A perforated metal façade doubles as a projection surface for images and video, turning the museum’s exterior into a living canvas for storytelling and performance. A motorized storefront wall opens directly to the street, inviting pedestrians into the space and blurring the line between public life and cultural experience. Inside, the museum emphasizes immersive, projection-mapped exhibitions and traditional displays. The museum also gains opportunities for concerts, community events, and crossover audiences.

At 380 Beale Street, the museum concept expands into a vibrant public destination. Anchored by a public art sculpture and a Hip Hop Walk of Fame, the site integrates cultural storytelling into the streetscape. The building’s façade and mural wall create a bold visual identity, while amphitheater-style steps double as seating for performances and community gatherings. A rooftop amenity space and green roof provide panoramic views over Beale Street, offering new opportunities for events and social connection. Ground-level retail and a gift shop activate the street edge, making the museum an everyday part of the Beale Street experience.

These concepts create a cultural ecosystem that celebrates Memphis hip hop on both a neighborhood and citywide scale. By merging immersive storytelling with public art, music, and performances, the Memphis Hip Hop Museum aims to become a modern landmark that honors the past, engages the present, and inspires the future of Memphis culture.
